Bichon Frise Safety During the Holidays

2009 December 16

The holidays are a fun and exciting time for us and our Bichon Frise puppy dogs as we all wait with joyful anticipation to find out what Santa Claus is bringing us. As we get into the hustle-and-bustle of the season, many of us can overlook some basic things that can be harmful to our Bichon.

Keep Bones Out of Reach: We were recently at a close friend’s home for Thanksgiving. The turkey was nicely carved and very juicy I might add. The carcass was left in the roasting pan and folks were busy eating and mingling so no one but my husband noticed that the family dog was helping himself to an entire Turkey wing right off the carcass! My husband was quick to react and removed the wing from the dog’s mouth. Many folks are not aware that turkey and chicken bones are a serious choking hazard for your dog that can be fatal as they may break apart and lodge in your dog’s throat. Some of us tend to give our dogs table scraps and it is important to remember to make sure these scraps are bone free so your pooch can enjoy them without hazard and you can have piece of mind.

Keep Plants Away: Many dogs like to eat plants and if you have Poinsettias and Mistletoe around for the holidays these can be seriously poisonous for your dog and must be kept away from their reach. As you decorate for the holidays remember that your family pooch can also enjoy the decorations along with you and your family but preferably from afar.
