Why is My Bichon Frise Scooting?

2011 January 27

Before getting our Bichon- Luna, we had never even heard of a dog’s anal glands. It wasn’t until our Luna was scooting around across the floor and at times a strong odor would waft from her back end that we learned about it. We were at the vets office and mentioned Luna scooting and the particular odor when he said her anal glands may be full and needed to be expressed. He then took her into the back room and shortly after a happy Luna emerged. We have done some research on this subject since, and thought it was good information that can keep your Bichon healthy so please read below.

Anal gland problems occur when a Bichon Frise’s feces are too soft, and while passing through the glands, do not empty them completely. If the glands produce too much liquid, it can thicken and clog the gland.  Dogs have two anal glands beneath the skin near their anus. You will know that your Bichon is having a problem when they begin to lick themselves frequently and attempt to drag their bottoms along the floor in a scooting motion.  The glands can become infected – continue reading.

Tricks My Bichon Frise Can Do! What Tricks Does Your Bichon Do?

2011 January 13

Does your Bichon do any tricks? Have you trained your Bichon Frise to do tricks? When our Luna was a puppy – probably around 6 months old, my husband taught her pretty quickly how to “shake hands” and “dance” and he would hold up a treat over her head and have her stand straight up on her hind legs and twirl in a circle. Luna just loves to please us and have us cheer and clap for joy when she does a trick.

A couple years later and now Luna is 4 yrs old! My-oh-my where the time has gone. We have been working to train Luna to “Lay Down” and this is just her plopping over onto her side and that is perfect. She has been a tiny bit more stubborn this time around and rather shakes hands but we have been persistent. Its so cute as Luna gets over-the-top excited when we are working with her to “lay down” and her fluffy tail will wag super fast and she comes right up to you and practically sits on you. For training treats and just about all Luna’s treats we use simple veggies like broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, snow peas, asparagus, and baby carrots and Luna just loves these.  It took a couple weeks of being persistent and going through a few snow peas and broccoli florets but all of a sudden Luna laid down on command and boy did we cheer her!! She was so happy!! Now, we try every couple days to get her to lay down and she will start wagging that tail and looking at us out of the corner of her beautiful Bichon eyes and sometimes just not do it and other times lay down right away. Either way, its so much fun for us and for Luna as she gets lots of attention and healthy treats.

We saw a YouTube video once where there is a Bichon named Belle and Belle does all kinds of tricks and its so fun to watch. Does your Bichon do tricks? Have you been successful in training your Bichon Frise to perform some tricks? What have you found to be a good method, commands? We would love to hear from  you.

A bed for those warm Bichons

2010 December 29

Our little Bichon loves to lay where it’s soft when she is in a cuddling mood. Sure, there are times a hard cold floor is just right on her tummy, but generally she’s a cuddler.

An issue we have had with her snuggling in is that she gets very hot. She doesn’t nap well when she is overheating. We have the ceiling fan on when she is in her favorite round rimmed bed but even then she tries to stretch out to cool off. It is hard for her to do this with the raised sides all the way around. We have tried one of the thick pillow beds but she likes to either put her nose under the outter edge or her head up on that edge of the round bed.

When at a friend’s house this last holiday weekend, we saw what we thought might be the perfect solution. The couldn’t remember where they got it and after sweeping through the local pet stores we were getting concerned.

The bed is open front and partial sides, yet the back third has a soft raised lip… just right to nose tuck or support her head when she wants to watch us while laying down.
Cesar Millan Olive Bolster Cuddler Dog Bed – Olive – 42″ found on the Designer Living.
The bed’s surface is made with Microtec fabric which is not only super soft but is a breathable microfiber material for your pet’s comfort. Luxurious extra filling and side bolsters provides more even more comfort in this cuddler. Each bed is designed with a non-skid bottom and removable zippered cover for ease in washing.”
